Default Rome
Im sure these have all been asked a thousand times, but I've been trying to search the forum and Im clearly not doing it properly and there are not many 2012 posts so I want to get the most up to date information possible.

how far is the train from civvaecchia port, and how long does it take to get into Rome?

Also any idea of the cost of a return trip?

Thank you.

It is a 90 minute ride to the heart of Rome by coach but by train this is what I found:
There is a train station in the town of Civitavecchia with several trains per hour going to Rome. Local trains take you to Rome's central station (Roma Termini) in about an hour and 20 minutes. Faster trains can make it in under an hour. The station is close to the entrance of the port, but quite a distance from where passengers usually disembark.

Hope this helps!

Corkgirl-

Janfred is correct. I tried to access the first post in this section that has a link to a train travel guide by a past member. However the link did not seem to work.

I would say that if you can get the express train (not the commuter train that stops at every station along the route) that the train would be faster than taking a private car. AND far cheaper. The train stop in the main station in Rome and you can quickly get into the subway right there at the train station in Rome. In Civ. its a couple of blocks to walk from the port bus drop off point to the train station. When you buy your ticket for Rome ask about the all in one ticket for the train/bus/ subway (metro) you can then use that for the day and get around really easily.

You can also go to the train Italiania web site to check schedules. Click on the little British flag to read it in English. You should also be able to purchase tickets on the website but it may be wiser to wait until you arrive so you know for sure when you will be there. There are ticket machines in the Rome train station (again click on the British flag fro English) I would buy your return tickets when you get to Rome so you know you have seats AND you know when you need to be back at the train station. Leave yourself some wiggle room time-wise and you should be fine.

I will post a primer on taking the train to Rome. You can take the free internal port shuttle bus from your ship to the Civitavecchia port entrance. From the port entrance you simply walk down the main street (keeping the sea on your left) and in 4-5 blocks (depends how you count) you will arrive at the train station on your left. We recommend purchasing a "BIRG" ticket which costs 9 Euros and will cover round trip regional trains to Rome as well as gving you unlimited use (for the entire day) of Rome's Metro (subway) and bus system (not including the HoHo buses). Do not even think about taking one of the few high speed trains since they cost a lot more, require reservations, and are not included in the BIRG ticket. You validate the BIRG ticket before you board your first train and then it will work to get you through the metro turnstyles and the Rome buses. They have now created a safe walkway within the port of Civitavecchia for those that would prefer to walk from their ship to the port entrance...but depending on docking position this can be a good mile walk (the free port shuttle buses do run several times an hour).

As to how long the train takes, it varies depending on the actual train and which Rome station. The end of the line is the Rome Termini (main station) which generally takes about 1:10..... However, if you get off at the S. Pietro staton (closest station to the Vatican) it only takes about 50 min (it takes about 20 minutes for the train to work its way through Rome to Termini). The regional trains are similar to commuter trains and have no reservations.
