Our last port on out cruise is Naples. We can't decide if we should go to Pompei or Capri.
Looking for advice <Edited to clarify subject line. -LP> |
I don't know how much time you have in Naples, but ships are usually there all day and you should have plenty of time to do both. We took a hydrofoil to Capri as soon as we docked; spent a few hours, then took another hydrofoil to Sorrento, had lunch, shopped, then took a bus to Pompeii.
If you do only have maybe half a day, either is great. Capri is beautiful and picturesque; Pompeii is facinating from a historical standpoint. |
To add to F-mattox's suggestion, you can also take the train to Pompeii (Pompeii Scavi station)
Then see Pompeii and return to Naples on the same train that takes you to Pompeii. Give yourself about an hour and a half for the train trip and taxi/walk from the Naples train station to the ship. Doing both, you can probably spend 3 hours in each place if you check hydrofoil schedules and train schedules so that you do not waste time waiting for the next train.hyrdofoil... |
Pompei are big and crowded
Herculaneum is smaller but are the best preserved and less crowded as Pompei A new, virtual reality museum restores to life the sights, sounds and smells of the Ancient Roman city of Herculaneum (definitely worth to visit) Both citties can be reach from the Central Station Garibaldi in Napels. Go across the street from the pier to the newspaper stand. Buy a bus ticket and take the €1 bus to the train station. From station Porta Nolana Corso Garibaldi (closer to sea port) 19 min Departure station Arrival station € 1,80 p.p. We would like to take the hydrofoil from Naples to Capri and Capri to Sorrento. Where do we find those boats and how are they call in Italian?
|
Well, the English/Italian translator says hydrofoil is "aliscafo" and ferry is " "traghetto"; but I'm 100% sure "ferry" and "hydrofoil" will work just fine.
You can catch the ferry to Capri right across the pier from where your ship docks. And the ferry to Sorrento leaves from the same pier where you dock in Capri. |
Thanks f-mattox (a little nervous, first time in Italy).

No worries. The people at the port of Naples and the nearby ferry and hydrofoil stations speak at least enough English that you will be fine. It is not a difficult trek to make. |
Thanks Dave, I am reassured now http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...icon_smile.gif
