Going on Oceania Insignia Barcelona to Rome in July 2009. Need opinions on shore excursions to ports Marseille, St Tropez, Monte Carlo,Portofino, Florence, Olbia, Sorrento Amalfi. Are Oceania shore excursions worth it or should do my own? How hard is it to do own? Is it safer to do ship excursions? Thanks,

Welcome to Cruise-Chat. Sorry I haven't been to any of these ports yet. However; there are benefits to taking the ships shore excursions. Particular in a foreign county where you don't speak the language. If you are on a ship's shore excursion the ship will wait for you if the excursion is late getting back to the ship. If your on your own they won't wait if your late.

genlum, what types of tours interest you? History, architecture, or anything else? We typically do a ship-sponsored excursion in European ports if we are visiting for the first time, for the reasons Cruise Fanatic stated. Let us know of any that might be of interest and we can help narrow down your choices.

And, welcome to cruise-chat!
