Welcome, kitten!! What a great itinerary.People will give you advice but you can always look up previous threads that the members have posted about each of those ports. Go to the toolbar just above your post and click on the "Find" tab. It will open a keyword search box. Simply put the port that you want information about and hit the "Go" button. Happy surfing!!

That is a terrific itinerary and we are very familiar with all of your ports which can be done on excursions or totally on your own (a lot cheaper). But for now I will focus on only Kusadasi since this is the only port we strongly recommend using a private tour operator. You can generally book a private tour for as few as two people for about the same cost(or less) than the cruise tours. There are many advantages to private tours to Ephesus since you are not stuck in a large group, forced to go to touristy shopping places, etc. Based on our own experience we recommend a company called EKOL (you can google them and find their web site) since they have been in business a long time, are reputable, and use professional guides. The key to booking a tour to Ephesus is that you should make sure it includes a visit to the amazing Terrace Houses. The Terrace Houses cost a small supplement (they are located within the ruins at Epeheus) and are not generally included in the large cruise line tours because they do not allow large groups into the Terrace Houses. As to your other ports, we suggest you do a little on-line and book store homework and than post your specific questions.

If you want to visit Rome from Civitavechia the ships excursions are both horribly expensive and tiresome due to the traffic
The best way in my opinion is to take the bus to the port gates(usually free)and walk straight ahead a few hundred yards to the station
You can buy returns to Rome which include the metro for around 10 euros
You must authorise the ticket before getting on to the train at the machine just as you exit to the platform-watch how others do it
The trains are frequent and quicker than road
I got details of the Italian rail system by googling-cannot remember the exact site but it took no finding
Enjoy the cruise-you will judging by the great itinery!

Hi Kitten We are also taking a cruise that stops in Salerno instesd of Naples (Celebrity Century, Oct. 1,2010). We want to take the Sita bus from Salerno to Positano and Amalfi. Does anyone know where the Salerno train station (busses leave from in front) is in relation to the port?

The Salerno train station is located right down town only a few blocks from the sea. However, since we do not know the actual docking location of your ship it is impossible to give you the distance and directions. The station could be anywhere from 4 blocks to 2 1/2 miles from your ship. If you are a bit too far you can just use a taxi or grab a local bus (many of the buses go to the stazione). My only problem with the SITA buses is they will not take you to Ravello. You can still go to Ravello by getting off the SITA bus at the Amalfi stop and than catching the local bus that goes from Amalfi to Ravello. That bus (to Ravello) only runs about once every 45 min which is a pain. Another option is to simply rent a car and drive, but than you have to deal with the hassle of parking at or near Positano. We love this area (have spent 2 extended vacations on the Amalfi Coast) but hate all the transportation hassles.
