We are a family with four young children who wish to go to Pompei from Naples Port for 5 hours. Is this easy ? How do we get there by train ?
What sites etc are most suitable ?

Thanks.

HH,

look here for Tom Ogg's advice on how to get from Civitavecchia to Rome by train.

Family members of mine have followed Tom's guides on numerous occasions and always found them to be excellent.

I noticed a few things missing from the first link (darn good directions). The train line to Pompeii (and Sorrento) is a private line called the Circumvesuiania Line. You can buy your tickets at the main level of the Naples train station, but than you must go down a few flights of steps to find the tracks. The line will often have multiple trains leaving from the same tracks, so make sure you are on the correct train (ask other passengers or the conductor by saying with a helpless look, "Pompeii Scavi?"). The other very important thing is that you must validate your train ticket before you get on the train buy inserting it into one of the small validation machines (they are usually yellow) which puts a time/date stamp on the ticket. Failure to validate can subject you to a large fine on-the-spot by the conductor.

Hank,

the train station mentioned by Tom Ogg is not Naples Main Station, but a smaller one situated on the Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi. Of course you can also use the Main Station, but it is a small additional walk from the port.

Thanks for this info! It sure has helped. I'm going on a cruise in May with 6-8 others and need to watch the budget. This sounds like a great way to explore Pompei.

Had not noticed that Tom was referencing that small station. We have always been reluctant to use that station because we had heard that not all the Circumvesuviania trains run from that particular station. I hope that Tom can shed some more light on the use of that station vs the main terminal.
