Our party of six will be in Athens for only one day. We need advice on private guides. We will have a few teens, (18, 15, 17) and an elderly, (84 yrs. old) member in the party. A private guide can help us make the most of our limited time and guide us to plan our day around the limitations of the elderly member in the group as well as the teens.

A couple of years ago we used Paul of Greek Taxi and were very pleased with our driver. The
website is www.greektaxi.gr. Hope this helps.

Thank you Sondi for the tip regarding Paul, with Greek Taxi. I'll look into their services.
Thanks a million,

It's of course a good idea using a private guide in Athens, especially regarding your 84er parent's needs.

I just want to tell you that we toured Athens by ourselves without any problem: my wife, me and our two teen sons (13 + 15) found it amazing to ride the town by subway, bus and going on feet.

It's easy and cheap to reach Acropolis: there's a subway station just a few steps from it. Many signals are both in greek and english.

Under the turkish domination the town had become nothing but a small village: it has been reprojected by german architects after the falling of the Ottoman empire so you will see, actually, something like a 19th century central-european capital.

We read a guide book before departure and studied our tour; we made even some "real life" in Athens, going to markets, shops, bars, mail office to buy stamps and post directly our postcards ... we took a lot of photos, had a great time and then returned on the ship in perfect time.

I'm sure you will however enjoy Athens.

Fredo,
My family is about the age of yours: 2 sons 11 and 15. Please make suggestions for any of the following ports: Barcelona, Nice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Santorini, Athens, Dubrovnik and Venice. We are a very active family and prefer to plan our own excursions (more economical!) but don't want to risk safety or risk missing the boat at the end of the day!
Thanks!

We have used Benvenuto Limos in Rome and Naples. They also offer services in Florence. We have found them to be very reliable and have very
knowledgeable and good drivers/guides. We plan to use them again later this year when we visit Italy. Their website is www.benvenutolimos.com.
As I mentioned above, we used Paul in Athens.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Sondi!

We have had a new development regarding our vacation. My 84 year old mother-in-law will be unable to join us.

This change, though heartbreaking, opens up the opportunity for us to take advantage of the many walking tours. Which one to take advantage of, I really am unsure. I've gathered that it is risky, the luck of the draw can result in a good guide or an incompetent guide.

Sondi, thank you for the tip regarding Bunvenuto Limos. We may very well use a driver for some part of our exploring!

You are very welcome, Nannette. I hope the information helps. We have had wonderful success with Benvenuto. Giovanni is the person who does the bookings and he has really good people driving for him. We have used his service four times and as I said, plan to use them again in October.
Good luck and have a great trip.

Hi cruiseeurope, welcome.
Sorry, I didn't go to this topic for a while so my reply is some late.

I think there's a real ship missing risk only if you absolutely want to visit Florence.

It's rather far from the usual ports of call (Civitavecchia, Genova). Livorno could be nearer, but I haven't ever heard of big cruise ships docking there.

Rome too is a bit far from the sea, but its real problem is that there are so many things to see you won't ever be ready to leave...

Go with Paul I see someone else recommends him.
Just back from cruise in April and he was great! driver will take you where YOU want to go so no time is lost on things you don't care about. We had a great day and covered a lot of ground and still got to the ship in good time.
