Its difficult to answer your question, because much depends on how much use you make of the Vaporetto system. The prices for using these water buses has been increasing so darn fast its hard to keep track. As of a few weeks ago the cost was 6.50 Euros for a single ticket (good for 1 hour). Its also possible to buy a 24 hour ticket (unlimited use) for 16 Euros. So, if you use the Vaporettos more than twice, you are better off buying a 24 hour pass (they also sell passes for longer periods). If you really like to walk, than you will find that its very possible to walk throughout Venice using only your feet. But, the Vaporetto system will also take you to the other islands in the Lagoon (Murano, Burano, Lido, and Torcello. Of these, my personal favorite is Burano, which is also the furthest from Venice (about 40 min by Vaporetto). The most popular Vaporetto Line (known as the circle route) just goes around Venice with many stops. Some tourists prefer to use a combination of walking and the Vaporetto to save time and some wear on your feet. Only you can decide whether and how often you use the vaporettos. Also keep in mind that Venice is very expensive (even for Italians). Be careful to check prices before you sit down at an outdoor cafe, because its possible to find yourself paying $20 for a cup of coffee (this can happen with the big cafes in St Marks Square). The best deals on food are the daily combination menus that are normally posted on chalk boards.
