International Calling

We are going to be in Jamaica and the Grand Caymen's the first week of May. I was going to add on an International calling plan to my cell phone for May. Turns out my cell phone is over 2 years old and can't be used Internationally. Does anyone have a recommendation on the best way to call home? I have a young child I need to check on at least 2-3 times during the week. I heard once that calling cards are bad so I don't know what other options I have. Thanks!

You might see if one of the AT&T prepaid calling cards work internationally. The kind you can buy at Walmart/Sams.

Most of those international calling cards don't actually work on the islands. On our southern cruise, we went to the phone booths they have set up and bought a calling card for that particular island. aruba paid $10 for a 12 minute phone card. If you have a newer phone with the "chip" you can buy a calling card, but it will only be good for that island that you bought it from.

Could you check in by email? I think most of the cruise lines have an internet cafe. On the princess line they have a webcam so you can even email a photo. If this is an option and you don't have a yahoo, aol, or hotmail address, you might want to get one before you leave. I couldn't log onto my adelphia email address so I had to use my hotmail one. But if you want to hear the voice of your little one, make friends with your waiter/waitress/room steward. They know where all the port pay phones are located.
