Has anyone flown American Airlines within the past year? If so, were you charge $2 for each piece of luggage that you check in? (I just read this, and wondered if it was true, as I am flying AA in September, and want to "know" ahead of time.)

If this is true, has anyone flown on any other airlines where this is happening?

They charge you $2 per piece of luggage that you check curbside. If you bring it in and check it at the counter, there is no charge. Think of it as a mandatory tip for the curbside check in boys...

Had the same experience on United and SAS; $2 per bag to check curbside; $0 if you take it inside to the counter yourseof.

I have flown AA several times this year. I didn't pay anything to check in San Jose or Las Vegas, but in San Diego it was $2. We just lugged them in at that airport. Besides that though, the flights went really well overall. I happen to like AA.

They also charged $2 for bottled water on my most recent flight.

I have heard of other airlines charging for curbside check-in. As Jim mentioned, think of it as a tip -- or as a small payment to bypass the longer lines in the terminal.

Spirit Airlines is now charging $5.00/bag each way when you fly with them. They allow you one carry on at no charge. I guess I can't complain since the airtickets are so cheap. We are flying r/t non-stop from Myrtle Beach to FLL for $150.00/pp so paying for luggage us just a way for the airline to actually up the price without making it seem you are paying a higher price.

Carol, This is great news! Heck, I would have booked the Liberty if I knew this

It is still so much less!
