First of all- nice to see you back, Tom!

Does anyone think it would be a nice touch to give the cabin and dining room stewards phone cards instead of cash IN ADDITION TO the mandatory gratuity? I give cash on NIGHT ONE.

My logic is this: the crew member would definitely not have to pool that tip, and it might convey that I sympathize with his or her situation more than cash would.

I remember as a waitress getting tons of cash over the years, but a few gifts with cash value were much more memorable. I once got a Toys 'r Us gift certificate at Christmas when I was a student with a young child....

Then again, cash is king, right?

Not on the ships but in the ports. You always see many crew members at the telephones close to the ship calling home with telephone cards.

I think it is a great idea. I have a guy from Mexico that works for me one day a week and I give him a $5,00 Mexican telephone card sporatically and I think he enjoys those more than he does being paid. I am going to try it on my next cruise.

Me too. Really good idea, I think.

BTW, anyone notice Carlalena's countdown clock has timed out? She's on her way!!! Am already grinning (or as Tom would have it, VBG !!) when I think about what she's going to have to say on her return.

I guess her role in this "family" is THE COMIC RELIEF.

My clock is winding steadily downward too, of course. It's a bit of "oh good" and a bit of "yikes". If you know what I mean.

Hi Newbie Rose, You are lucky to be out on the West Coast. We have given a lot of thought to doing an Alaskan cruise. I'll be watching for your comments when you return. We are only a couple of hours from Toronto so we get better deals on Carribean Cruises with air built in. Right now we are investigating taking the train out to the coast.
