On this Memorial Day weekend, I would like to take this opportunity to thank any cruise-chat members who are veterans for your service to our country. How fortunate we are to live in the USA, and how thankful we are to all the veterans past and present for the precious freedoms that we have.

God Bless Each and Every One of You!

A very thoughtful and well-educated man in our town recites In Flanders Fields every year at the Memorial Day observance.

For the history of Memorial Day, and to see General John Logan's General Order #11, look here.

Thank you Dave for the website. It is very interesting. I didn't realize that the holiday originated that long ago.

Nadine,

When I was younger and still living in the little village of Philmont, NY, the whole town shut down on Memorial Day (we still called it Decoration Day - even in the 1960's). We'd have a parade which ended on the town ballfield, and we'd have the ceremony which always included someone reading "General Logan's Order". It seemed as though the whole town always showed up, although I know that wasn't true. But I can clearly recall all the veterans who were there, most wearing American Legion or VFW caps. It made a great impression on me that has not diminished over the years.

And so it transpired over my life that I became eligible for American Legion and VFW membership and joined both outfits. In one way it is a shame that I did become eligible, since this means wars happened while I was on active duty. But in another way it brought me in touch with some really great Americans - those of the WWII generation who are leaving us more and more, every day.

There is a VFW post in Houston that had a team on a pool league I play on. They all pooled their money, I think about $10. a week and bough Texas Lottery tickets. A few years ago they hit it and each became overnight millionaires. All great guys and gals, couldn't have happend to a better group.

Cheers, Neil
