HI, When they say a ship has been refurbished or renovated, what exactly does that mean?
If it was put into service say in 1995 and refurbished in 2001? Thanks, Nat

Nat,

it depends. Which ship are you talking about in particular?

Usually this means that the ship was drydocked and had a thorough refurbishment of its hotel und deck departments, including e.g. new carpets, reconfigurations of cabins and public spaces, the addition of balconies etc. - it really depends.

It seems like most of the Carnival ships, Imagination, Fantasy, ect have all had some type of renovation?? I don't mind going on and older ship but I don't want it to look old...lol.. if you know what I mean. Thanks!

All ships, not just those Carnival vessels you mentioned, get periodic refurbishments. They are used non-stop for several years and things just get worn out. So every few years the ship is removed from service and spends a few weeks in a shipyard. As Raoul notes, they replace carpets, bedding, curtains, etc. They repaint and redecorate. They rip out bar and kitchen equipment and install new stuff. It is not much different than fixing up an old house.

Sometimes they decide to change the ship's layout in order to make it more competitive with newer ships. New bars or specialty restaurants are installed. Original space is re-worked to gain more use from the available area. Sometimes the ship is cut in half and a new section is installed. This is known as stretching the ship. It has been done to several vessels. This new section will have additional cabins, new lounges, etc. It makes it essentially a new ship.

I recently went on Soveriegn of the Seas which underway an infamous makeover documented in the show 'Drydock - A cruiseship reborn' - very interesting viewing by the way.

Anyway, I would say the ship did have a very new feeling to it, certainly looked very nice. The only thing I did find is that the cabin was very small (RCI and most cruiselines are making them a tad bigger these days) and there wasn't quite the amount of recreational options we've seen on other ships. Still, I would say it was a noticeable positive change.

I'm going to Alaska on NCL Wind in July. I've heard conflicting reports. The first report is: The wind is being refurbished (sp) this spring.
The second report: The wind was refurbished in 1998.
Anyone know or heard anything about the new refurbishing?
Thanks for your help

The ship was stretched in 1998 and went through a refurbishment in 2001. I can't find information to confirm a recent refurbishment, but it seems like it would be about time for one.
