How old does one have to be in order to drink on a cruise. Me and my wife are newly weds and she is only 19. She really doesn't want to spend 7 days sneaking around drinking alcohol like a kid. This is our first cruise and I would also like to know what is the classiest, yet not crazy expensive cruise out there. Thanks Lorenzo.

Hi Lorenzo,

it depends. On most cruise lines operating from the U.S., you have to be 21. On European cruise lines, it's usually 18.

Im not sure about the age thing, but probably if your using a US cruise line she's going to have to be 21. The Sensation is usually referred to as a good "first time" cruise ship. Also it's recommended for young couples. My husband and I are 26, we're going in July, the 5 day Grand Cayman and Cozumel Cruise, it'll be our first cruise also.

HI: On US cruises you must be 21, the easiest way to avoid it is to have a beverage in your room (thats is you are old enough) then you can drink in there and not have to worry. In addition depending on how old she looks I have never known a bartender to card anyone. Usually you don't carry anything with you except your room card; you could do the ordering and then there is no question.

Good luck, I think whatever cruise you choose you'll be happy. A good first time cruise for young people is Carnival!

Hi dst,

on some cruise lines, "underage" passengers have an "underage comment" on their "cruise card", sometimes visible sometimes in the magnetic strip, so they cannot order / sign for alcoholic beverages.

Also, Lorenzo, please keep in mind that some cruise lines will not accept passengers under the age of 21 unless they are accompanied by somebody 25 or older. As you are married, this should not apply to you, however. But it's always better to check.

Regarding what cruise to take, it really depends. There are lots of cruise lines, lots of destinations etc.

Tell us a little bit more about what you and your wife are looking for when taking a cruise (and probably also what you are not looking for) and we should be able to give you some recommendations. Also, what destinations are you interested in?
