There is a fire burning on Catalina Island, off the coast of California. Some cruiseships stop here on the Baja cruises. The fire is close to their tiny town of Avalon, and residents are evacuating. I wonder if the cruise ships, will have to drop it off there itinerary? The pictures I saw looked awfully close to avalon, it didn't look like they'd be able to stop there in my opinion. The residents say there is lots of smoke and ash in the city. The military is involved in the fight, and helping transport firefighters to the island. This really is sad for me. Being a So. Cal native, I have been there several times. Let's not forget the georgia and florida fires. My heart goes out to all the people and poor animals, affected by all the fires. Lil' Lori

I'm sure if any ship is scheduled, they will have to change her itinerary. They have been evacuating Islanders all night, so it wouldn't make sense to drop passengers off. You can bet it's not business as usual in Avalon. Too bad for Catalina....Avalon is such a quaint town. So close to Los Angeles, but so completely different. I used to go there twice a summer, usually to the Isthmus by sailboat, and then Avalon by ferry.

They just did an update on the national news. There are a few hotspots left. The marine layer has rolled in, and temps have dropped. They are hoping "things will turn around". Lets cross our fingers. Lil' Lori I'm off the work now. Lil' Lori

I am actually scheduled to take a cruise departing from LA on May 21. One of the stops is Catalina. I just called the cruise line and they have not made any plans to change the itinerary as of yet.

With almost two weeks out from the cruise, unless the port is damaged, you should have no problems there.

I live in So.Cal and I can tell you that the news is all over this fire. There are updates every hour (if not more often). At this point, Avalon is safe. The fire is headed away from it now. It is only 10% contained, but with the lower temps and the added fire engines and crews continuing to arrive, it looks pretty promising. Also, the four baby bald eagles that were recently born are safe. They are not near the flames.
