can someone please explain why cruise ships have empty pools and spas when they enter port? Is this due to balast or is to do with the engines not running at "full steam"? thanx http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...icon_smile.gif

You've got my curiosity up.....which ship were you on? Did this happen every day? Just once?

Good question. I have also noticed that some nights the pools are empty and then filled the next day. Why?

I used to think the pools were empty on embarkation day in some ports because the water may be too shallow and they needed to lighten the ship up. But then I went out of the same port on a different cruise line and the pools were filled, so that shot my first theory out of the air. I don't really know why some do this and some don't.

As for the pools being empty at night....that is so they can clean the walls and pumps overnight and have them ready for use in the morning.

I thought it was because the water might develop swells due to maneuvering to get in and out of port. Obviously sometimes that wouldn't happen, but it might be policy just in case.

As far as at night, could be cleaning, but I thought it was for safety reasons as well. If the water gets choppy or swell-y the water can start slopping around FAST. It is very dangerous to be in a pool if the ship starts rocking- it wouldn't take much to be swept over the deck.

Just My Humble GUESS.
