Can cell phones be used on board ship? WE are traveling on the victory out of NYC to Nova Scotia and the Miracle out of Tampa to the W. Caribbean.
In other words is there service and would it be considered an international call?
Thanks

There has been a lot of discussion about this on other threads and sites.

People can get cellphone coverage in the Caribbean, but apparently it is "roaming", and the charge is anywhere from $1.99 to $2.99 per minute - even with an International plan.

You may be able to get regular roaming when you are off the east coast of the US, but it's probably worthwhile for you to contact your carrier and find out exactly what they will charge you. Some people have been hit with bills from $200 to $500 for calls between ships!

I hate cell phones as much as you do, on vacation, in restaurants, at the movies. However when you are responsible for an elderly parent and aunt you feel a need to be available. On vacations I check my cell phone for five minutes each night. No messages equals good news and then I don't touch it again until the next night.

You should be able to get "roaming" coverage in most ports. When you are "at sea" there will be no coverage (no land = no cell towers = no service). Watch your roaming charges when you are in port. Knowing wher eyou are going and calling your cell company's customer service should get you all the info you need. Some cell companies require you activate international calling before you use it (prevents theft)

You should get the ships phone number to your parents so that if there is an emergency, they can call and talk to you (or leave a message) that way you are not paying for roaming charges and you only get charged if they need you. But be sure they understand its for emergencies only, the ship to shore charges are nothing to laugh at.
