We are thinking of slipping in an extra cruise before we fly on to the UK.
How long does it take on average to clear customs, immigration etc, on arrival at LAX and how long should we allow to get from the airport to the docks to pick up the ship.
Additional info is we arrive about 1240 into LA and the ship leaves at 1730. Providing there are no flight delays, do we have time?

Peter, this could turn into a real nail-biter. You're coming into LAX in the busiest part of the day. Clearing customs and immigration could take quite a while. especially if you're coming in on a jumbo; you don't mention what day of the week or what type of plane or where you are coming from--these would all be factors. You could be slowed down if several international flights arrive around the same time. Then there is the problem of hitting the freeway at rush hour. You don't say if you're sailing from San Pedro or Long Beach; either port could be a 60-90 minute trip(less if it's weekend). A 12:40 arrival means you"ll be at the gate by 13:00 and a 17:30 sailing means you would have to be on board by 17:00, leaving you just four hours from plane to ship. Are you a gambling man? Would you be heartbroken if you missed the ship? Could/would you fly to the first port to meet the ship? These are questions only you can answer. I couldn't handle the anxiety I'd feel trying to make a connection like that--but that's me. For me there are just too many unknowns. But if you decide to go for it, good luck and God bless!

Thank you f-mattox for that very clear and concise reply. I'm not a gambling man except for the odd fling on the tables in the casino and maybe the odd horse race. What you say makes complete sense, we are traveling on a jumbo and the time factor appears to be too close to call. I think if we go ahead we will try to alter the flight to come in a day earlier.
What about the return journey. According to the cruise line Royal Caribbean the ship docks at 0600 on the Friday at I think? San Pedro. We have to be at LAX at about 1400 (two hours before boarding)that same day. Do you see any problem here.

Peter, flying in a day early is of course the perfect solution. I see no problem with the return at all. You might consider purchasing your transfer from Royal Caribbean; but even if you don't, you should be off the ship by 10:00 and at LAX before 12:00. Have a wonderful trip!
By the way, I did a "pub crawl". among other things, in your fair city while on a Princess cruise from Auckland to Sydney a few years ago; I absolutely love New Zealand and the people are the warmest and friendliest I've met anywhere. God bless.

Thanks f-mattox for your kind words.
We came to Dunedin 30 years ago from Manchester in the UK and fell in love with Dunedin. Of course in those days NZ was about 20 years behind the rest of the world but has caught up very quickly not all for the best unfortunately. Anyway it's still a great place to live with a very low crime rate.
