Cell phone use on cruise ship & film going through airport scanners

Will be leaving on an Alaskan cruise next week (first time cruising). Just wondering if cell phones are usable on board or at ports.
Haven't flown lately either. Would like to know if video tapes and film are still safe in carry-on baggage or should I get the protective wrappers for them.

Hi,

usually cell phones don't work at sea, but as you are often close to shore in Alaska, they might even work while the ship is at sea. There should be no problems in port, however.

Concerning film, I understand that the latest post Sept. 11th scanners indeed might harm them so might be a good idea to use protective wrappers. I always tell the security staff about this so they hopefully won't consider me suspicious.

Make sure not to pack your film in your check-thru luggage. The airlines have been advising that the new x-ray machines used for the check-thru stuff is strong enough to damage any film, not just the high ASA types. So far I have not had any problem with film in my carryon bag. I haven't tried video tapes, though, so Raoul's advice is probably good on that score.

My husband and I went on a trip in February and we had film on our carry on we never told the security or took it out and it was fine. On the cell phone question my parents just went on the Alaska cruise in June with princess and they called me while in there room at port. However they did say they tried to call while at see and it did not work. So you would be best to use it at port.
