Hi,
I'm a female in my mid-forties and in a couple of weeks will be off on my first cruise from Galveston to Cozamel. I'll be cruising alone, and just wondered if anyone out there has cruised as a single with no companion, and, if so, do you have any tips and advice for me?

Thanks

First of all, welcome to your newest addiction...cruising! I went on my first "solo cruise in 2002 and had a wonderful time. The main thing is to get out of your cabin often, attend the various mixers, etc. Traveling solo is a lot cheaper, easier to coordinate, and easier to agree on where to go and what to do! LOL

I went on 4 cruises with singlescruise.com before remarrying and had a wonderful time. I cannot recommend them enough!

Yes, I have done this frequently and while the first time it can be a little daunting, with the right attitude it can be great. I have written articles for Cruise Reviews on this very topic and this one in particular provides you with lots of suggestions based on my personal experiences: http://www.cruisereviews.com/SingleatSea.htm .

Have fun!
Nancy

Thanks so much for replying to my post. I'll admit I'm a bit anxious about my upcoming cruise. Indeed, I never thought I'd actually book it, but I did!
I hope I too wil become addicted to cruising. I am wondering though---being as I am alone, would you recommend me staying with a group and taking one of the shore excursions, or is it safe to wander around on my own?
Thanks again!

I would go with a group and meet a few fellow cruisers. Some ports are safe for one, but is better to go on certain Islands with a group.

It is easy to meet people on a cruise

This is one instance where I would fully recommend booking your excursions through the ship. I would not book them prior to boarding, but wait until you get onboard. You will more than likely meet people that you will want to sightsee with. If you haven't, and book through the ship, you at least know that everyone else is from the ship too. I was so apprehensive before my first solo cruise and it turned out great! Although, it started off funny before we left the airport....met a friend's sister and her husband on the plane going on the same cruise..they looked at me goofy when I said i was going too...alone. boarding the ship, ran into an old high school girlfriend and her husband...more embarassment..and then to top it off ran into a girl that had just quit our company and her family on Lido deck before even checking out my room! Talk about having the "Big L" on my forehead! Anyway, it all worked out to be the best vacation I have ever had!

I've done a few cruises on my own as well. Sometimes, when my hubby is griping, I still wish I were alone. I definitely recommend going on excursions through the ship and with others. Make sure you go to events on board as well, the shows are great, the casino is tight but fun, and the dance clubs are fun. You will meet people that enjoy cruising and find they will enjoy the same things you do. The best part is, you have no one nagging you!!!

Hi! My name is Sheri and I am newly divorced, 42, and will be going on my first singles cruise next sept on a fall foliage tour out of new york. I live in texas so this will be quite an adventure! I went on a cruise out of galveston over halloween on the Ecstasy with my mom, and we had a blast! Cozumel was beautiful! Like the others who commented said, I would definitely book excursions through the ship. Have fun and let us know how it went!

My first two cruises I went solo.
First a warning. Both times I felt like there must of been a bet between the crew to see who would get to sleep with the single girl. At first the attention was flattering, but when a waiter showed up each night at my room with wine or champagne, and a cruise director knocked on my door after midnight to see how I was getting along it got rather unnerving. Even the head engineer cross the line of decorum a couple times. I now refrain from any socializing with crew, no matter how harmless it may seem at first.

On the other hand I have met dozens of people on cruises and have no problem dining or going on excursions alone. Go on the excursions you want to go on, don't worry about what new aquaintences are doing, you may not be in that port again. Horseback riding through a forest, was one of the best events of my life, even though I was in a group of complete strangers.

Bring a book and take it with you most anywhere. That way you never feel awkward and always have something to do.

Get to know your table mates. If someone at your table is threatening or gives you unwanted attention, don't be afraid to ask for
aother table. I was intimidated by another guest on my first cruise and sat through improper and sometimes crude advances because I didn't realizes I was able to move, till several days later.

Next, bring money for spa treatments. You will find they enhance the luxury of time alone.

Plan all your shore excursions with a group, that way your always safe.
