Me and my wife are going on honeymoon at the end of August on a Med and Greek Island cruise. Our final port of call is Naples but we've heard good things about Capri, Sorento and Pompeii but we can't decide which of these great places to visit and how much is possible in one day? Does anyone have any good advice which could help us?
Its possible but you won't have time to see as much as you would like. We did Pompeii and Herculaneum and a meal in Sorento. But it was move.. move.. move... If we skipped the Herculaneum then we probably could have done Capri instead but we figured we would be back and would get to Capri on the next trip.
If you went to Pompeii and then Sorento and caught the high speed ferry to Capri and then the ferry from Capri back to the Port of Naples, it could be done but you have to plan very well. If there are delays (like a train strike or something)its going to throw you off. Get the train and ferry schedules on-line and plan it out and see if you would feel comfortable with the timing.
We did all three comfortably in one day on a Princess Excursion. We probably paid a little more than we would have doing it on our own but it was our first time there and the convenience and peace of mind made it worthwhile to us.
On arrival at Naples we took the hydrofoil to Capri where we spent several hours; then another hydrofoil to Sorrento where we had a leisurely lunch in a seaside restaurant and time for walking around and shopping. Then a motorcoach to Pompeii and Herculaneum. There was ample time for a guided tour and then time on our own. And there was even time for the obligatory stop at a small Cameo factory and showroom. All in all a very full and satisfying day.
Wow that would be the way to do it. That was not an option for us as the ship was not in port long enough for them to offer that tour. At least I don't recall it being offered. We were exhausted with out Capri, but if you truly wanted to see them all...
We considered the same tour on NCL a few months ago. Ultimately, we went for one to Sorrento (including lunch at a family farm) and Pompeii. (And, of course, the obligatory cameo factory.) Even that was a very tiring day... yet among the best excursions we've ever taken.
If you're going to pack a lot into one day, consider a ship tour so you won't need to be concerned about multiple schedules. Even with a ship tour, we had a couple of hours to wander around Sorrento, which was nice.
Capri and Sorrento can be done on your own. Adding Pompeii makes it more complicated.
