I'm really anxious to see if anyone has ever gone on a cruise and didn't have their luggage get on the ship with them.

Hi Sandy,

That happened to us two years ago on an Alaskan Cruise. It was not the fault of the Cruise line (NCL) but of the separate airline that we had booked ourselves. Anyway, it was three days into the cruise - at Ketchikan that our luggage arrived. We were not prepared - having arrived in Vancouver in summer attire and did not have outfits with us in our carry-on. The NCL staff were just wonderful with us. They gave us toiletries, t-shirts, free laundry for the few bits we did have. The airline gave us an allowance to buy things on the ship, but unless you're below a size 6 (we aren't) there are not a lot of choices. We managed to pick up hoodies, socks and a few things but were really relieved when we got our luggage.

Because of that rough start on our very first cruise, we repeated it - same itinerary, same ship this past summer. It was absolutely wonderful. We had excellent carry-on just in case, we did a land tour of Vancouver and Whistler for two days before our cruise and our luggage was in our stateroom before the muster drill.

It has taught me an invaluable lesson. Always take a few days' of clothing in your carry-on and arrive a day before the cruise. That's what we're doing on our next cruise in March/08 as well.

A neighbour can top almost any lost luggage tales.

She spent pre cruise days shopping in Bangkok. A special purchase was a new purse, allowing her to put her old purse in her cabin luggage. It was only when about to board the ship that she realized her passport was in that old purse, now somewhere in the belly of the ship awaiting to be brought to her cabin.

Her husband was allowed to board and search through the hundreds of black suitcases. Sailing was delayed. In the nick of time he found the suitcase and she was allowed on to the cheers of those lining the deck!

Can you imagine being stranded in Bangkok without a passport?

It certainly does happen, but as mentioned it seems rarely the fault of the cruiseline.

Your chance of missing your luggage is the same as anyone else who flies nowadays. It happens.

So what can you do? Well I don't work in the travel industry but I have flown a lot and i can give you some recommendations which are free, so you can determine what they are worth.

First, as already said. Arrive early, at least a day but preferably two. My understanding is most mishandled bags (which is what the airlines call it) are returned withing 24 hours. So if you arrive at 10pm but you board at 10 am the next day...you didn't give the airline the time it needs to get you your bag.

Two, try to fly direct - Not possible all the time but with fewest connections and look at the connection times. Try to get an itinerary with at least 2 hours between flights. Most mishandling happens during connections apparently.

Three, you can consider new services you can find on the internet to ship your bags by courier so they are at your hotel before you get there. It is or is not expensive according to your situation, but for peace of mind, it may be worth it.

Forth, there is something called a globalbagtag which is also new and you can look for that on the net. I cant speak for how well they work because I only just ordered them myself. The idea is it is a more secure tag which is more unlikely to come off, and has a code that helps the airline to identify the bag.

Beyond that, all I can say is don't ever not go on a cruise because you are worried about losing your bags. Thankfully the odds seem overwhelmingly in your favour that you will arrive with bags in hand.

Oh, one other thing,, JetBlue has the best record for not loosing bags, but worried about that problem too, I found out that they have no baggage retrieval system the way the legacy carriers do. Now that may have recently changed and perhaps someone can help there.

So like my Father says, what you gain in the straight-away you lose in the go-around.

Hope this helps.

Smooth sailing.

The two biggest culprits for lost baggage are the airlines and the transfers (motorcoaches from airport to pier or vice versa). You have to fly so no way around that one. I'm a huge fan of grabbing a cab for my transportation from airport and piers. I like to know my luggage is where I am whenever possible. So before booking those transfers think twice about whether the convenience is worth the risk.

Of all the clients I've had with lost or delayed baggage over the yaers I'd bet 90% or more involved airlines or transfers. You can have the bus, I'll take the cab and be on the ship before those in the bus and know where my luggage is.

Cheers, Neil

A friend ended up on the Sensation on what we call her "naked cruise". She flew in the day of the cruise and she made it....her luggage did not...the airline just sent her luggage back to Memphis!! Thank goodness she had cruise insurance and was able to purchase $400.00 (I think) worth of clothing.

Her luggage was waiting for her a the home airport when she returned.
