I’m beginning planning for an Amsterdam to Budapest river cruise for next summer. Any suggestions of cruise operators, tour companies, or other helpful hints would be appreciated. My tour experience is limited to a four-day trip on the Yangtze River this past July. Thanks.

River cruise operators that come to mind are Uniworld, Viking River Cruises, Peter Deilmann, to name a few. There are others. My suggestion would be to work with a travel agent who is experienced in river cruises, who can help you choose the right boat and itinerary to match your needs. But take a look at those to begin with, for a general idea of what's around.

We did the 14 day Amesterdam - Budapest river cruise this past May on Viking River Cruises. Viking was fine and I also heard many good things about Avalon. My one thought is that you should spend a few extra days in Budapest. We really enjoyed this city and we had enough extra days (we spent 3 nights) to fully explore the city and also grab a train to a nearby village.
