Upgrading your cabin

Upon boarding if you ask for an upgraded cabin that is available...will they upgrade you for free? Or make you pay the difference? I'm just wondering - I've never done this before and was wondering if it is like planes (where you can upgrade from economy to business class for free if available).

No such luck! If upgrades are available there is a cost. Sometimes it can be a good deal, but you do have to pay for the privilege.

Not on any planes I've been on. I must be flying the wrong airlines. Are you talking about frequent flyers being able to upgrade?

Have not flown for a while. But when there use to be Coach and First Class on USAir and Delta, I have been upgraded to First Class several times just by asking. Well actually I did a little flirting first

But to answer the question posed, the ship will be sold out on boarding day. They will sell the ship at any price to fill it up. In other words is not like a Hotel with rooms available.

Last year, we actually got business class seating on AirTrans when we arrived at the gate. It seems our TA did not get us the assigned seating prior to departure. Once arriving at the airport, there were no two seats together in coach. Therefore, we were lucky enough to get business class. As for upgrades on ships, I agree with IslandCruz, most ships are sold out on boarding day. If there happens to be rooms available, there would be an surcharge to upgrade. We've tried it, and turned it down. Not much of a savings based on booking the upgrade originally.
