Well I must disagree, We have had two bad and I do mean bad IOHO bad cruises..Our first with Carnival thus we havent sailed with them again...(it was more attitude of corp and staff) and the one on HAL (that too was a result of Corporate attitude and some of the on Board Staff..

Its not like we are picky its just a principal type of thing .

What I found to be funny is that we didnt have problems with HAL until after the Merger with Carnival took place.
Although we might like to try Princess we are a bit gun shy because of the pesky corporate umbrella that exsisits.

Then again Thats just our take..

Lisa Good luck and i await your observations on your Carnival Adventure

Joey and David,
I find it interesting you state you didn't start having problems until after Carnival merged with HAL. It was in 1989 that the acquisition took place. If one can go by your list of cruises-your first was on the Ecstasy which didn't come out until 1991, and if as listed, the Ryndam was your second, it didn't come out until 1994. Cunard, Seabourn, and Windstar, are also under the Carnival Corp. but I don't hear the negative comments about them solely because they belong to Carnival Corp.

Tom,
I would be curious what CCL ships you choose. I know you are a big fan of RCL/CEL. I haven't been on the Pride out there in LAX, but the Spirit class and Conquest class are really nice ships.

How can anybody answer this question without being on every cruiseline???

I think, before you give an answer you have to be at least 2 or 3 times on different ships from different cruiselines to answer such a subjective question. And itīs always subjective.
I have been disappointed on one Celebrity ship, but that doesnīt mean, that Celebrity is not a good cruiseline for me. I have to give them a second or a third chance.
But maybe other cruiselines like HAL or Princess Cruises are much better, but I donīt know, because I have not been on any of their ships.
Many people like me have a special opinion about a cruiseline like Carnival and that depends on the reviews or also, how they promote their cruises (funcruises). But that does not mean, that Carnival is not a good cruise line.
People chosing for this line have other interests or other preferences. And thats good.
For every clientele a special cruiseline.

Best regards
Marita

Cruise Fanatic

I stand corrected as to the timeframe on Carnival’s acquisitions. I had always assumed (and we all know what happens when we [*** u me] things) that the TA at HAL that I used for our Oosterdam voyage was correct in his statements to us.
I appreciate you correcting my misinformation. I will no longer assert that belief publicly.

As consumers, we choose which companies we will support and spend our discretion funds with. After the Ecstasy and the treatment on the Oosterdam we chose not top give Carnival Corporation any more of those vacation dollars.

You have valid points as to the non negativity of Cunard, Seabourn, and Windstar, But we choose not to add to the bottom line of that corporation.

Thanks Cruise Fanatic for setting the record straight.

We noticed the less than great service with HAL on our second cruise on the Zaandam last year. It was our first experience with the new auto tipping, including adding 15% to your drinks. This is an excerpt from the review we wrote:

Now for HAL it self. We have a good comparison as our last HAL cruise before this one was also the Zaandam. We were very disappointed in HAL as they are becoming exactly like their parent--Carnival. Maybe they need to change their name to Halival! As soon as we got aboard they kept trying to sell us the $50 soda cards. You tell one no thanks and they keep coming at you relentlessly.
We know they are just doing their jobs and are not blaming the messenger, just the message. We get enough spam at home--we don't need it on a cruise ship! All the little things that made HAL unique that we fell in love with on our first HAL cruise on the old Westerdam are now gone. No more Dutch night, no more afternoon lemonade at the AFT pool. They spoiled us, so they are responsible for our disappointment. We don't except change very well, especially when we have grown accustomed to the way it was. Not that the service was bad, it was not. It was okay, just not quite like it was.

We hope nobody gets the impression we did not have a great cruise--we did! We make do with what we have. As we stated above, nobody is going to prevent us from having a great cruise. Will we sail HAL again? Maybe, we never say never. Will they still be our first choice? No, they will not. Would we recommend them to others? Not as adamant as we once did. We would now recommend other lines before them.

We must state that this is only our opinion and is the only opinion we are entitled to have--our own.

THANK YOU, ALL, FOR YOUR INPUT!!!

I certainly got the insight on the differences and similiarities of each cruiseline.

We have two cruises lined up this year, Explorer feb 06 and Mariner Apr 06. We also have enough points on our RCCL Visa for an additional cruise.(can you say "Freebie")

I think after this years cruising we will give Holland America and possibly a Med cruise on Costa or someone other than RCCL. My wife and I take advantage of the Spa and gym. We took a course on giving each other massages. Seems like I am always giving, but I kind of enjoy making her feel good. There is an educational aspect to cruising I never realized before.

CRUISE FANATIC. I retired from the Air Force in 1995. I was stationed in California twice, England, Greece, Omaha, Colorado Springs, Mississippi and Hawaii. Best thing in the world for an 18 year old to do when dad can't afford college. I acquired all the schooling I desired through the CCAF.

Now own my own business in steel fabrication and am very blessed with tons of work.

Thank you for your input into my question on who's the best cruiseline.

I plan to sit and plan out next years cruise activities with the insight given by the cruise-chatters.

thx again

Tom, I think it has been at least 10 years since I've sailed on Carnival too. There is a meeting in October I may attend on a Carnival ship, so I, too, am curious about how that cruise line has changed nad improved in the last many years.

I'm looking forward to reading your review, once you cruise!

Cruise Fanatic......You pick the ships and I will pick the dates. I will write fair and honest reviews.

Up to the challenge?

Tom
