Do you need to have a current passport to go to the Carribbean or can you still use birth certificates? Trying to take advantage of a great cruise price but realized my passport has expired.

Depends on when the cruise is. Although I hear they will extend the dates, at present you will need a passport starting on January 1st, 2007.

I'm sorry, I'm looking at going next month. There are 4 of us and it will cost between 4 and 5 hundred dollars if we use one of those express renewal services. I'd rather save that money for excursions if I could.

Right now, you're ok with birth certificates and a valid picture id (driver's license). We went and got our passports renewed last November after our cruise because they were saying as of January 1, 2006, passports would be required. Who knows when they'll start enforcing the passport rule, but for now you'll be fine. Have a wonderful cruise!!

Thanks Penny. I didn't want to put a big deposit on the trip to find out passports were going to keep me from going. I'm going to need to find out what my daughter who is 14 will need since she doesn't have a drivers license yet.

Does she have a student id? I honestly think it'll be ok with just her birth certficate since you are her mother, but maybe someone who travels with children can answer this.

Check with your state DMV. My daughter is 13 and we got her a state issued I.D. for our trip to Cozumel in March. Worked perfectly.

Hi Aggie!! We just got off the Enchantment of the Seas (yesterday...I already want to go back!!) and our kids only needed birth certificates (original or certified copies).
Have a wonderful time!
Stephanie

To back Stephanie up, kids under 16 don't need picture IDs. It never hurts to have one, but it won't be necessary for boarding, or for flying.
