United announced today that effective for domestic tickets purchased on or after 9/16/08, for travel on or after 11/11/08, a second piece of checked luggage will cost you $50. This doubles the current surcharge. The usual exemptions apply. Read more here .

Don't wish to put anyone off from using this airline but if you do decide to fly with them, I would suggest you pay by credit card.

Over here bets are being taken for the next Airline to go bust....odds for British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air France & Lufthansa are all at 100/1 but the odds for United Airlines are as low as 20/1
Whilst it is very unlikely that they will be the next airline to go bust they are doing themselves no favours by this 2nd checked bag fee. It might put off more passengers from using this airline in favour of an airline without such a high extra charge.

I will be looking for an internal flight a bit later this year as I have a cruise planned & this extra charge makes me less likely to use United. The money saved could pay for my taxi fares.

On our last flight I could not believe all the carry ons. On one leg of it there were no open over head storage area, they stashed them somewhere else.
The 2nd charge has to be in play here.

Me too, and the annoying thing is the airlines are still not enforcing size rules. I saw many passengers on my most recent flights with items that were not even close to the legal size for a carry-on.

Excess carry-ons are my major pet peeve when it comes to flying. I had four hours before my flight from Philadelphia about a week ago, and watched as pax maneuvered luggage on and off the planes. A couple of pax had so much they had to find a cart to transport it all.

I can't take credit for this next idea...I read it on CNN, I think...yet, it's one that might work. Allow checked bags to ride for free (up to a reasonable weight limit) and charge for carry-ons. That should clear up some overhead space!

Just FYI, Delta is charging $150 for overweight luggage. It doesn't matter if it's 1 pound or 30.

IMO these airlines are getting a bit carried away with all these extra charges OMG pretty soon people will need to lessen their stay just to afford to fly.

Yes indeed, on Delta a second bag that is both overweight and oversized can cost you $315 in fees when they get done. $50 for it being the 2nd bag, $90 for being overweight on Delta (51-70 lbs) for domestic flights, and $175 for being oversized. On United it is $50, $125, and $125 respectively for $300. Delta Excess Baggage Fees United Excess Baggage Fees

I wouldn't need 2 bags if the airlines wouldn't lose people's luggage. I pack in a way that if either suitcase would get lost then I would have enough clothes for the week. I know there is a possibility of them losing both bags but I don't usually think that's the case. Anyways maybe people wouldn't need to bring all the carry-ons & 2nd suitcases if the airlines would be more careful.

You're spot on Valeries220. I've all too often had my luggage go on vacation somewhere that I'm not.
