Booking all with the cruiseline vs. getting there on your own

We are having a bit of a problem getting all our connections in place for our Med Cruise out of Citivecchia. We wnat to leave a day before the flight arranged by the Cruise line so we can spend a day in ROme, but then we worry about how to get to the ship on time without using the transfers provided by the Cruiseline.

Any suggestions or comments from experienced Cruisers?

Not sure what cruise line you are sailing, but check with your travel agent or the cruise line. Most cruise lines allow you to purchase the transfers to the ship separately from the air. You would have to get yourselves back to the airport - but it is an option. If your travel agent can't help (or you don't have one), check with the concierge at your hotel (before you leave). They often have a local connection for transfers such as this.
