How to get an upgrade?

I am sailing on NCL spirit in september, I have the lowest cabin, how do I get an upgrade? Or create a better chance for an upgrade I should say?

I have heard, but have not had success with this personally so far - that as soon as the ship leaves port, you can check at the purser's desk if there are any cabins available at the upgrade level that you are looking for. If available, I've heard that you may upgrade at that time ( I would suggest NOT unpacking until you check). We have never been successful so far, it seems they seldom have vacant cabins that you'd want to trade up for. Those go first, leaving the lower level interiors for last. I am sailing on the Jewel next month. I was checking NCL's web site and noticed the price of the room had gone down for lattitudes members.Since I was payed in full and they do not reund They upgraded the rooms. Before I had paid in full I was given the lower price.
