Look for and only use official taxis. They have black-and-yellow number plates with the letters NP (for New Providence).

The number one "don't" tip I always give about Nassau is:

Do not take the Water Taxi to Paradise Island! Take a regular taxi instead.

I don't think the tourist areas of the island are dirty and dangerous. Of course being careful in any port is a good idea.
