I am trying to book an Alaska cruise... it's my first cruise and I was so amazed to find out most of the ships are booked up for 2007 already. We are left with eitehr JUne or August. Which is a better month??

Doesn't help you much when the vote is split 50/50 (at the time I wrote this).

June is a little more tempermental weather wise, but it really depends on what you want to see. There are more whales earlier in the summer but they may still be there in August. If you want to see the Salmon run (bears eating them) then August is your best bet.

We went mid June and it was nice. the temperature varied from 50 to 75 degrees. average was about 65.

My sister-in-law lives in Alaska and she told us the best time to visit would be around July sometime. I would imagine that it would just be a little warmer in August but pretty much the same. I guess once it gets to about 80 there they think they are in a heat wave!

The weather can vary. July is likely to be the warmest month, but there can be some very nice weather in June and August - also in May and September, if you're lucky. If you are planning a cruisetour (adding on a tour before or after your cruise into the interior of Alaska, to visit Denali National Park, for example), be aware that late June through early August are the buggiest months. Not a huge deal in southeast Alaska, along the Inside Passage, but it could be a bit of a problem in Denali.

Also note, cruise and tour fares are higher in June, July and August; you can save by booking a May or September trip.

Are you using a cruise oriented Travel Agent to help you book your cruise? Many Travel Agencies belong to Consortiums and have space on many sailings blocked out.

Hm.. the problem we have is that there aren't many cruise oriented travel agent in NJ. We have only tried AAA and liberty travel. And they have to call the cruiseline to book! And we are skeptical about the online cruise only agency since we are booking a group with families and friends...
