while trying to figure out what cruise to take my hubby on next I noticed that Carnival is not stopping on mainland Mexico, only Cozumel. Anyone know why? Is it the drug killings. or have the port fees gotten to high? any ideas?
Carnival, HAL and Princess temporarily stopped port visits to Mazatlan on the the West coast due to an incident. But they have since started port calls again. I have not heard anything about the Gulf coast.
On the Gulf Coast Carnival still stops at Cozumel, Calica, Progesso, and Costa Maya. It's been years since they stopped at Playa Del Carmen. Many years ago they would stopped at Playa Del Carmen to let passengers off, then go on to Cozumel. On the West the Splendor was out of commission for a while because of the fire. The Paradise and Spirit are still stopping at Mexico.

Carnival was in Cabo the same day we were there on Feb 8 - they sailed from San Diego on the 6th on a 5 day. I don't know if they're going further down or not. We heard in Mazatlan that there are only 2 ships a week stopping now - down from 8 a week last year. I must say, the locals at every stop were very glad to see us and went out of their way to make us welcome. That said, I must note that we saw a LOT of grafitti in every port. More than I can ever remember seeing in Mexico.
A little missed out sidelight on Carnival leaving Mobile is that it also means Carnival will no longer cruise to Calica (Palya Del Carmen.) We have only been there twice, and the first time to the Mayan Ruins. Playa is a beautifu little city with nice beach and a place I want to explore more.
I hope to book the Oct. 13 cruise on the Elation, as it will be the last planned trip to Calica.
As of now, Mazatlan is the only Mexican port Carnival is not going to, on the West Coast.
Did you go to Tulum? Those ruins are beautiful. We did an excursion that went to Tulum and Xel-ha. Would have loved more time in Xel-ha. I wonder if Carnival will still call on Calica from either Galveston or New Orleans? Dwayne, any insights?
After Oct. 3, not more cruises for Calica are on the books for ANY Carnival ship. Galveston and NOLA will have twin 7 days trips to Jamaica, Cayman and Cozumel, while four day trips to Cozumel and five days to Cozumel and Progresso.
I actually pulled up every ship going west through all of 2012 and no ship has Calica as a destination.
Calica has a lot to offer. The port itself seems odd, since it is a Rock Quarry, but so much in trips are available.
