I think we all know that the treatments on a cruise are expensive, but I wanted to start this thread about the "Sales Pitch." I do enjoy a massage on a cruise, choose a port day, and combine a coupon from my Crown & Anchor booklet.
When the lovely massage technician greets me, and we are in the room alone, I have the following discussion.....I do understand that part of your job is to sell and promote the spa products, but I sell for a living, and I am on vacation. If you can please skip that part of the treatment, it will reflect on your gratuity.
Works like a charm and I have had many stress free spa treatments since.

I think that is a GREAT approach; I especially like the " . . .it will reflect on your gratuity." I'm sure they hear that. I'm sure they will make up for it on others. After several admonitions from my wife about keeping her sales resistance up in the Spa, a good friend of ours still came away with over $900 in product after her first vist--and appointments for another $500 in treatments.
Thanks Dwayne, that last line is the catch. The lovely gals from the spa rarely come out to play with others, but a couple of times I have had a drink in the Viking Crown and most really hate the sales part too, and their commission is NOT great, the gratuity they get to keep more of.

Yet, it happened to one of my male friends. He succumbed to the sales pitch and returned to the cabin with about $200 of goods. It's against board rules for me to print the words his spouse shared with the spa staff after that incident. But, now I know why, when our families cruised together, that he told me he was "not allowed to go to the spa."
Unfortunately, it's a shame you feel you have to give a larger tip in order not to be harassed. A simple "No thank you I'm not interested." should be enough
I just tell a white lie. I have been a sucker for spa products in the past. So now, when they ask, I just say, "no thanks, I've already bought some". I did, but they were just from a prior cruise. I feel sneaky, but it works. I still have some of these products. I don't need anymore, at least not yet. I do enjoy a massage on board, even though it is more costly. I work alot of overtime, to help pay for the cruise, so I feel I deserve it. Lil' Lori
I was on a cruise that stopped in St. Lucia many moons ago before the spa phase got into full swing. But I decided to have my hair done at the salon.
As we circumnavigated the island, there was one rainbow after another popping up before my eyes.
I'm glad they weren't trying to hussle anything on me, I'd have bought and Edsel it was so breathtaking.
