It depends on the cruise line. If it's a single cruiser, the line can charge 150% to 200% of the double occupancy rate. Some lines have small rooms for single cruisers, and the rate may be better than the upcharge of a standard stateroom. Here is a link to another discussion regarding the same topic. It's a few years old, but I think the general rule still applies that rates for singles are 150-200% of the double occupancy rate for singles.

denjoker - When cruising singly I have been able to receive 150% fares on certain categories of staterooms on Carnival and on Holland America. I suggest your son contact his TA for the latest in cruise opportunities for single travelers.

I've cruised solo on Carnival, HAL, and Princess. I don't remember exactly, but I don't think the fare was 200% on any of them. It was a lot more than per person, but not double. And they were inside rooms, not preferred rooms at all.

Like Penny I have cruised solo and never paid 200%. If your son is cruising solo, he might have more flexibilty, and booking last minute 30-60 days ahead, the cruise ships are trying to fill rooms and great prices are to be had.
