Bmh, I had just seen this today as well and hope that not all airlines will adopt such measures...I do think that many people take advantage of the overhead and really pack them in. I still think that the customer should be able to bring one of the small carryons for no charge. Flying is sooooo out of control with the add ons.

Pretty soon they're going to make us fly ourselves or charge extra for a flight crew.

people fly for convience but this is getting out of hand. dont know what recourse we have other then just stop flying.
I have train tickets booked and paid for for my next cruise. no charge for carryon or checked.

I think you have the answer, macmom111; look for a resurgence in train travel.

The article says they you can have a personal item, just anything in the overhead bin will cost which I actually agree with. Lately it seems that every time I fly, there are all these people with huge bags that they are trying to stuff in the overhead which causes us delays getting off the ground. It's also more stuff for security to scan through which means more chances for items like knifes, explosives, etc and the odds of them missing such items increasing. I'd rather they let us check baggage for free but charge to carry on more than 1 personal item. Either that, or just raise the ticket prices across the board and stop nickle and diming us to death.

It seems the airlines can do a better job of making sure carry-ons fit into that template at the ticket counters and gates, before allowing it on the plane. I'd prefer that as a first step rather than charging for luggage in the overhead bins.

Yes indeed. They should check all carry-on luggage for size prior to the TSA checkpoints. 100% check. But where do we usually see the templates? At the gates where they are pretty much totally ignored by both the gate agents and the passengers. It really burns me up.

Sandy and Dave you are sooooo right! Fries my b... to see how large some of these so called carryons are and ignored at the gate..Follow the rules and enforce them and it would be better for us all...
Train travel to Puerto Rico would be a tuff one!
