Tipping on Excursions

Is it customary to tip on excursions? We are going on the Stingray and snorkel excursion in Grand Caymen and I am not sure if we are supposed to tip or just pay the cost of the excursion. Also, I assume we tip taxi drivers as we do in the States. What is the going rate for this? Any other hints on tipping will be useful.

The providers of the shore excursion will certainly expect a tip, but it is quite subjective. If they are really good and go out of their way, I would tip as much as 20% of the value of the shore excursion, if not so good less. If not good at a lot less to nothing.

I always try to tip taxi drivers at least 10 to 20%. I try to negotiate a firm rate for the taxi riad/tour and then let the guy know that if he pleases us, there is some additional money in it.

There will be 14 of us. I believe our total excursion is $627.00. At 20% that would be $125.00 for 3 hrs. I think I am in the wrong business. Maybe there is more than one person to share it with though. I was thinking more like $5.00 per head but if 20% is the going rate for good service then I guess that is what it will be.

If your guide keeps you longer and gives you more, then 20% is a bargain. On the other hand, if he gives you less and you feel like you got ripped off, don't tip at all. There is no fixed rule. If you tip poor performance, you guarantee that the next client will receive the same. On the other hand, if you tip great performance, ditto.

I will be anxious to here how your excursion went and your impressions about tipping when it is over.
