In early stages of planning, but what is the best time of year to go weatherwise?

I would definitely try to go in the Spring or Fall; my first choices for beating the heat and the crowds would be May or September. Try to avoid July and August; these are usually the hottest and most humid months, and also when Europeans are on vacation--most sites and attractions are very crowded.
