How do we go about finding travel ins. We are planning on a Panama Canal cruise in Oct. We have a family memeber with cancer....IF....at the last minute we could not make the trip due to her illness or death would we be totally refunded with ins?

Sorry to hear that, cousins. You'd have to find coverage that included that type of coverage in the contract. There are several places to purchase insurance. Just make sure to read the contract, even if the sales person states that the type of coverage is covred, read the contract including the fine print. Insuremytrip will do comparison of rates on-line.

I like going to insuremytrip.com and comparing and buying a policy. You need to read the details of coverage carefully, especially the definition of family member. It usually extends only for immediate family and not cousins, uncles, aunts, nephews, etc.

Well it would be my husbands sister. Thank for the info. On that website I can type in the coverage I am looking for and they will show me a policy for that exact coverage? What aout because she has a pre-existing illness?

Not exactly. You get to enter trip cost and dates and trip type etc.. then it will show you a bunch of travel insurance company policies with what they cover. Then they let you compare them... So you should be able to find one with the coverages you need (including pre-existing conditions)

Most travel insurance sold these days have the stipulation that you have to purchase the policy within 15 days of making your initial deposit in order to be covered for cancellations due to pre-existing conditions in yourselves or your immediate family. There is also a rider available, also within 15 days of cruise deposit, that will cover some percentage of your non-refundable costs if you cancel for a non-covered reason.

Insurance policies cover you in the event that someone dies, whether or not it's from a pre-existing condition. Since your husband would be one of the ones taking out this insurance policy, your cancellation would be covered if the worst happens, because his sister is his immediate family.

It get trickier, however, if you have to cancel because if she takes a turn for the worse and you don't feel you can leave, since that WOULD be due to a pre-existing condition. I agree that you should call one or two insurance companies and clarify your options at this point.

Just found something I never knew re.ins....to get "cancel for any reason" it must inc.flights,,,plus purchased within 14 days as said above...wanted to get it for cruise portion only and not able to....of course, if driving to port,no problem...this makes it much more expensive of course....
