I have a cruise booked for Feb. 2010. I have been looking for air fares from Ottawa, Ontario and the prices are way too high. Average of $1,500 for my DH and I to fly to Fort Lauderdale. Any suggestions?
How are the prices from Montreal? How about from Michigan? How about flying to Miami? It would cost about $75 to get from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale via ground transportation. You could always make a road trip out of it. We drove from Ft. Lauderdale to Hawksberry, Ontario and back one year for vacation. We even managed to sightsee and visit relatives/friends along the way. If we had just been driving, we could have made it in 2 days (to Ontario). However, we went in the summer, not when there was 20' of snow on the ground . Maybe you could catch a flight to New York or New Jersey, then connect with Air Tran, Jet Blue, or something like that.
You are traveling during a peak season. If you're coming in during the week of Superbowl which is Feb 7th in Miami; then that's even worse. Have you considered the VIA and Amtrak?
We live on the West coast and either fly out of Spokane or Seattle. It has to date been a lot cheaper to fly from the US. We also find that if we fly east Ft Lauderdale is generally cheaper, the last shuttle to Miami was less than $50:00 each I think.
Folks I feel for you, I am also booked on a February cruise out of Miami. I live in Detroit, and through Northwerst I can usually fly for $250-$300, the flight I wanted was $360 when I first looked two months ago, and today is $660....I am considering all options now.

Have you looked at Westjet or some of the charter flight Sunwing, Skyservice, AT
I would fly in the day before you never know what the weather will be like then.

Thanks for replies. We used to fly out of Syracuse, New York but that is getting pricey as well and would require us to spend the night there either going and coming as well. Really weather dependent at that time of the year. We may try driving which would take us two long days and even longer if there is a snow storm etc. We always try to arrive the day before the cruise. I get weekly bulletins from West Jet and Air Canada but no seat sales for February. Seat sales usually mean that you have to fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Our cruise leaves on a Saturday.
I can sympathize with you. My local airport (Huntsville/Decatur - HSV) was recently listed as the most expensive airport to fly out of in the U.S. when airfares were compared. My problem is I am too lazy to drive 100 miles north or south where I can get much cheaper fares at either Birmingham or Nashville.
