I think in Canada they are called GICs - guaranteed investment certificates.

I callled my bank they said it would be easiest for me to open a seperate savings account for the money I need for the cruise. She never even mentioned a GIC. I'll call her back today to see if I should change it. Thank you

I would assume they have something like our short-term certificates of deposit. Of course, they're not paying a great deal of interest on anything, but something is better than nothing.
