I was supposed to sail on Carnival Victory 12/31/06, but our flight from South Dakota to Chicago was delayed for 7 hours because of a mechanical problem. I thought it would be handled because we booked our airfare through Carnival. But between United and Carnival, they could not get us on another flight to Miami in time for Embarkation. In the end, the airline got us as far as Miami (at 11pm, rather than 1pm) and we had to fly AT OUR OWN EXPENSE to Grand Cayman because Carnival told us there are no flights to the ship's first port of call (Costa Maya, Mexico) and it was not safe to fly to Cancun, and take a 5-hour taxi to Costa Maya. We had a group of 9, so the 4-day detour in Cayman cost us an additional $4000 between airfare, hotel, and meals when we should have been on the ship. We finally got on the ship Thursday (1/4/2007), and spent 3 disappointing nights onboard. Once on the ship, we received no special treatment and there was no mention of any credit for our hardships.

Has anyone had a similar experience or have any suggestions on how to get some kind of compensation for our added expenses?

Just another reason to purchase travel insurance. Also, traveling the day of a cruise is always "chancy". That must have been very disappointing for you.

If you purchased travel insurance, then you need to file a claim for your additional expenditures. Since you purchased the air through Carnival and the cruise did you purchase the travel protection?

If not then write a letter to Carnival, keep it short and to the point about the delay and the fact that you only were able to join the ship for the last 3 days and explain why, with proof from the airlines, send it to the main address at Carnival in Miami with attention to the Research Dept. You might get a credit towards your next cruise, you never know. I have seen it happen. Try to keep the letter strictly to the facts, not a complaint letter against Carnival, after all it was not their fault the airline experienced mechanical problems. Again, if you purchased travel insurance file a claim on that also.

We did not purchase insurance. We were under the impression that if there was a delay, arrangements would be made to get us to the next port. Naive, perhaps.
At the time of booking, we actually requested to leave the prior day if they thought it would be necessary. They did not. I understand that it is not Carnival's fault that the airline cancelled the flight, however, we received no cooperation from them on booking alternate flights. They simply directed us to the airline, and said that the airline was required to get us to the next port. It was a "He said, She said" situation.
Carol, thank you for your advice on where to direct my complaint.

If the air travel was purchased with the cruise through Carnival, isn't CCL supposed to get you to the next port? I always thought that was the reason you would pay more to book air with them?

The responsibility is with the airline, not CCL. However they should assist you. BTW we paid less for the airfare by booking air through CCL.
It's still wise to book travel insurance !!!!!!!!!

joergr- I wasn't disputing the travel insurance part.. I was just syaing that I thought the whole point of booking the airfare with the cruiseline was for this reason. Much like if you book an excursion though the ship, and that excursion is late back to the ship, the cruiseline will get you to the next port.

If you paid less for airfare through the cruiseline, then you would be the first person I have ever heard that from. I normally get a much better rate booking it myself.

yes, travel insurance is a wise move.

Jim, I do believe you are correct. The only time we have ever flown in the day of the cruise was when we sailed out of San Juan a few years ago and bought our air through Carnival. Northwest had an entire Airbus go out of service that was FULL of people headed to San Juan for that cruise.

We were the lucky ones. We happen to be at the Northwest counter at 5AM and Jean (I will never forget her name) got us 4 first class tickets together on an American flight. It was still close, but we arrived on time and our luggage made it. In our situation, I don't know what Carnival would have done...because Northwest handled it.

However, (the point is ~~and I promise I have one) our friends were not so lucky. They had to spend the night in Memphis and be flown to the next port. They had also booked their air through Carnival and Northwest paid for their hotel room in Memphis AND got them to the next port. They did not pay one extra penny.

I don't know if the original OP got sucker by the airline (who would ultimately be responsible) or not.

But that is how our friend's experience was handled.

LHP.. thanks for backing me on that. We had a close one on our second cruise. Flew Delta into Miami (booked through the cruise line) Our flight was 4 hours late but the cruiseline held the ship and had busses andpeople waiting for us to wisk us to the ship. They literally threw us and our luggage onto the ship (through a door even with thedock, not through the cruise terminal. The first and only time I have ever been on a ship without going through checkin
