Passport Needed??

I will be cruising next March and was wondering if passports will be the only way to travel to the southern caribbean??
I have heard discussion of the "western" caribbean and needing them, but I want to avoid confusion and desparate last minute attempts at getting a passport, if the belief is that they will be needed in 2006 as the only alternative to travelling.

It looks as if December 2005 is the deadline and after that you will need a passport.

I would go ahead and get one now and not risk having it turn into a crisis before the cruise.
