divers checking for bombs???

I heard that ships pay to have divers check all around for bombs, etc. before taking off. Is this true?

At the Port of Miami, police divers check cruise ships. They do not, however, check every single ship. And they don't publicize when they will be checking a ship, of course.

You should be nearly 100% guaranteed that your ship will never leave the water. Just a small point to make, planes take off and ships "set sail." Sorry, stuff like that jumps out at me and I hope you don't mind me making the point.

The port of Miami has a group of 5 or 6 police divers who are trained with military divers to check out cruise and commercial ships for "devices" and drugs that could be attached to ship hulls. I guess they don't like to use the word "bomb" so as not to cause panic. I watched a segment on our local news that showed the divers checking out the Majesty. I was happy about that since I was going on the Majesty a few days later. They check every inch of the ship. It was really interesting.

I see your cruise is getting close

I think the answer is yes and no. Not every ship for each run is checked. I think the Port Authority provides some of the services, and as Nole said the local police.

The US Coast Guard also keeps a close eye on the ships. After 9/11 the Coast Guard would actually escort the ships in and out of ports along with the Harbour Master and Tugs.
