As cabins are released towards the end from travel agencies etc...can we switch to another cabin- as long as it is in the same "category" or does that cost extra? Would that be done through the travel agent you originally booked or could you just call the cruiseline directly and ask for a different room?
I'd have to say that having available cabins is rare. Or at least the cruise lines always claim the ship is full.
Doesn't hurt to ask. Why would you want to do this? Is your assigned cabin bad? If it was a cruise line assigned cabin, be prepared to hear that yours is the "best" they have left.

I believe you said the TA told you that you were already in the penalty phase. Isn't that why you paid in full? I know with Princess it is 75 days out; HAL should be similar.

the ship sails Nov 29th, when would final payment be due?
According to the HAL Website, it would be due 76 days before the cruise date, which would have been September 14. Click here, then select Cruise Preparation (along the top), then on the left Changes & Cancellations, then Cancellation Policies. But, check your documents to be sure, as this can sometimes vary between ships and itineraries.
Carnival's is 61 to 76 days depending on the cruise length. I can still change cabins at will within my category or up 1, or any lower. I am 24 days out, and they still have cabins though.
Sandy, they released a bunch of cabins shortly after final payment on my cruise just like you said. They dropped the prices and added upgrades too. If they don't get them filled soon I look for further price reductions.
