As most of you know, I broke my wrist on May 7th and we had to cancel our Alaskan cruise. We were supposed to leave on May 16th. The doctor advised against it.
We had purchased travel insurance through the cruise line. We booked our flights and pre-cruise hotel package through Princess as well as the cruise and land tour. We are talking big bucks here!!
We called Princess on May 8th after the Dr. appointment. On May 10th, they credited our charge account with $548. This was cancellation amount that they could give us. Then it was up to the insurance policy to take over.
Today we received a check from their insurance company for our total fees, with the exception of the insurance premium, of course. I am just amazed that this was handled so quickly and easily! We have never cruised on Princess before, but we will definitely book again.
Most experienced cruisers would recommend against buying insurance from the cruise line, and I would agree with them. This time, we took the chance and it worked out better than we could have hoped for.
Unless you have money that you won't miss if you have to cancel your cruise, I would say that insurance is a necessary part of your total cruise package!

My recovery is moving right along. I think I mentioned that I have a metal plate and 11 screws in my wrist. Would you believe that one week after surgery, they removed the bandages! Scared me to death to walk around with my wrist unprotected. I started therapy this week and I am doing all kinds of stretch exercises. Amazing. All this in only 19 days!
TrvlPro, we are already researching our next cruise! Thanks to the insurance policy, we can look at another Alaskan cruise. Researching and planning a cruise is so much fun.
Yes, be sure to get the medical card that states you have plates/pins to show to security when you do go on your trip.. It saves the hassle. (Might want to have it out before you go through the detector, a buddy of mine almost got clubbed by an zealot guard want the detector went off and he began to reach into his back pocket.)

Nadine, so glad to hear you're on the mend. Now, kick your heels up and let everyone wait on you. Gotta milk if for all it's worth.
Glad you're better.
