Upper beds in Verandah Suites

We are planning our next HAL cruise on the Maasdam. Has anyone had experience with the upper bed in the verandah rooms? We will be 3 adults (mother & daughters ages 40ish and 70ish) so we are not bendable teenagers. I thought the upper bed would take up less room than the sofa bed but is it comfortable for an adult? Is the sofa bed a single or double? My thoughts are that the upper bed takes up less room so 3 adults in that room would be "do-able". I don't want to trip over my sister in her sofa bed at 6am while I make my way to the verandah to view docking in St.Lucia. Since it is a 10 day cruise getting a delux verandah suite is $$$$$ so I am trying to avoid the extra expense.

we just came back from the Carnival Victory and in our cabin (2 adults 2 kids) we had one big bed for the adults, one converted sofa which is very comfortable for and adult. The bunk however has a 5 step ladder, which was no problem for my son, but it's something to consider if you are not comfortable with "crawling" into your bed.
