After numerous Caribbean cruises, May 19, "Italian Enchantment" on the Veendam will be our first Mediterranean cruise. We don't mind spending the money for shore excursions but don't want to waste money in ports where we can manage on our own. Any advice? Happy cruising! NY Cruisers

My family and I sail on the Veendam for Italian Enchantment April 29th-the trip before yours. I have done a little research and feel that in Rome and probably the Florence/Pisa/Cinque Terre stop, one of the shore excursions including the sights you want to see is probably the easiest thing to do. I have been on several cruises, one to the mediterranean. My sister and I prefer to "do our own thing"-get off the ship, find local public transportation, find our own way and see the REAL sights and eat some FABULOUS local food. We originally wanted to take trains from port to destination, but I have decided against this for several reasons: 1. Ticket cost 2. Travel time 3. Relative safety (or lack there of) in Italian train stations. I think in Monte Carlo, Ajaccio, and Messina it is easier and probably more worthwhile to venture off the beaten path. My dad and I were almost left behind two years ago in Venice, so I temper my adventure with more precaution these days! Have you done any reading since your post?
