Hi Bob E; I've been through the Canal twice and I've been on Veendam, sister to Statendam, but I haven't done the two together :-)
I don't know what type of cabin you are thinking about, but if there was ever a time for a balcony, this is it! The railings can get very crowded, especially going through the locks; so it's really nice to have your own vantage point. We pretty much camped out on our balcony all day, and took full advantage of room service.
I really loved Veendam, especially the size; it dosen't have all the choices of the larger ships, but everything about it was impressive, and that from a dyed-in-the-wool Princess fan!
If you have any specific questions, I'll try to help. But other than "get a balcony", all I can suggest is "have a great time!"
Awesome!! I am trying to figure out how to swing the 10 day Panama Canal (if I keep my job). 15 day means full-transit, that's great! I agree with Rick, this is one cruise that a balcony is really best. I've read a lot of reviews that it's a good thing to do part of the passage on board and part down below, but I think that's when you turn around. Don't know if you can do both vantage points on a full-transit. It takes 8-10 hours, so get a good night's sleep the night before so you can take full advantage of it.
We will be crossing paths...Getting off as you get on....This is my 24th cruise but never with Holland America....If this goes well, I'm planning on taking Holland America for their 15 day round trip to Hawaii.....We can compare notes when we both get back from the Canal...
I've sailed with them twice before, but many years ago. Very classy in a subdued sort of way.
It's still tentative, but I get so excited that I can't contain myself.
Only my cruise-chat friends truly understand this addiction.
Bob - - trading the Oasis for the Statendam will definitely be a different experience. HAL does tend to more quiet and sedate - - you will find the shows in the lounge, the piano bar, dancing in the Queens Lounge, Crows Nest and disco, and of course a casino. But no multiple "night club" type enterrainment. That being said - I've been on HAL cruises that have had large groups of party-ers . . . to both you and Marsha, I'm interested in your feed-back on the ship and cruise - I'm looking at it for 2011.... I've extremely envious...
