Is it true that HAL actually opens and inspects carry on bags, and confiscates concealed liquor?
I've cruised on HAL before they started the no room booze policy, and many times since on Celebrity.
Celebrity has the same stated policy, but as long as you are reasonable discreet, they don't enforce it. I always bring a bottle or buy one ashore for our room, and carry it aboard in my backpack. They Xray the backpack, but invariably ignore the bottle. I have never seen Celebrity take any liquor that wasn't in plain sight, as in a Duty Free box.
We were on the Zuiderdam in August and I carried about 6 bottles of wine 3 in my carry on and the rest in my suitcases. My husband carried a 6 pack of dark beer in his carry-on. After it went through the x-ray machine they immeditately sent him to another table and the beer was confiscated. The wine..no problem, said it was ok. They will confiscate any hard liquers or beers but will allow wine to go through.
Guess I'll reverse my usual practice of carrying rum on and buying wine in the dining room.
It's usually less expensive anyway to pay corkage on a decent bottle of your own than to buy even mediocre wine on board and pay a 15% tip.
