Did I choose the wrong cabin?
Did we choose the wrong cabin? We knew we wanted a balcony on our Oosterdam Alaskan cruise. We picked the cabin location we thought we might like, and that happened to be VC. But I'm watching prices on other cruises between now and our departure date. And VC is the one category that HAL is slashing the price on. Anyone know why? Is VC actually the initials for a disease, or is that where they mount the fog horn? Or maybe the cleanout plug for the ship's entire sewage system is in VC? I digress. Anyway, here is a sample of pricing:

VA 1,799
VB 1,699
VC 949
VD 1,499
VE 1,399
VF 1,299
VH 849

Should I scramble for an upgrade?

Perhaps because there are more cabins in that category than the others? Relax. VC cabins are perfectly fine and in a good location. Years ago most lines had fewer categories, but they found that people are willing to pay more for what is perceived as a better cabin just because it has a different category designation - even though the cabin next to it is identical, just 10 feet farther from the elevator.

I see no reason why VC shouldn't be a good location. The information you gave of just prices is too vague without the sail dates. It's hard to say why that category is different. Depending on what the sail date is, it could have something to do with group spaced being released and now they have to fill that space. Again, it's hard to say without more information on the sailing.

Billbo......You might just be able to get a cabin credit posted to your cruise is well worth contacting the cruiseline regarding an adjustment!!

Cruise date is 6/23/13. Not sure what you mean, BillyBuzz, about a credit. I'm not looking for compensation for anything. Just the way the pricing works out is odd, since earlier the VC cabins were priced right under the VB and higher than VD. But the closer you get to cruise date, the lower VC goes. That's why I wondered if there is a reason people aren't booking VC. Here is a fuller look at today's pricing:
----Jun 16---Jun 9--Jun 2--May 26--May 19--May 12---May 5
VC --1199---949---999--- -999----899-----899------999

As Dave says, the VC cabins are probably just fine. This becomes more of a curiosity that anything.

I wonder if its because most of the VCs are doubles whereas the other categories have more options for third or fourth passengers? Maybe the line is trying to entice couples to go for a double-occupancy cabin to keep the triples open to families? (I took just a quick look at the deck plan and this was the only difference that jumped out.)

Very perceptive, Lisa? Thanks. That may be it!

End of story...Just got cabin assignment for SS (from SZ guaranteed). Concerned because my roof is the Lido deck. Will that be loud overhead?

I return to answer my own question. No, we did not end up on the wrong side of the ship. Assigned to port side when we thought we wanted starboard--we weren't sure how it would be. Turned out that at every arrival the town was on our (port) side of the ship. It was wonderful waking up in the mornings to find a new town out on our balcony, where we had breakfast.
