Alaska: Port or Starboard?
Cruising the 7-day roundtrip HAL route from Seattle (Tracey Arm, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Victoria). I have it in my mind that starboard side offers the best views from my balcony. Is that correct, or does it not matter? I ask because I'm trying to decide if I should roll the dice on a "guaranteed" upgrade--guaranteed meaning there is no guarantee where you'll end up.

Personally, I don't think there was a lot of difference. You're doing a round trip. What you see going up will be different coming back anyway.

Well, the routing up and back is different. So I thought there might be a difference.

For things worthwhile, the Captain will usually spin the ship around so each side can get a view, such as at a glacier. But do you want to know the real secret? Just go topside on an open deck and you'll see everything you want to see.

Sounds like good general advice Dave, not unlike what I've read elsewhere. But we are dealing with limited mobility. Long periods at the rail and/or strolling around the deck may not be an option.

Lured more by the extra elbow room, we took the "guaranteed" upgrade and shoved aside mobility issues and concern over which side of the ship we will end up. Comments here and on some other threads helped us get mentally past the port-starboard debate. Thanks to all.
